– The Most Comprehensive Natural Landscapes
The Gyantse county is on the northern bank of the Nyangchu River. This county is a vital point connecting Yadong in the south, Shigatse in the west, Lhoka (Shannan) in the east, and Lhasa in the southeast.
The Gyantse was once considered the third-largest city in Tibet Autonomous Region after Lhasa and Shigatse. Nonetheless, Gyantse has preserved much of its old way of life, the old street and the old architecture. Gyantse is once the leading centre for wood and wool trade between India and Tibet.
In 1904 it became the site of a major battle during Colonel Younghusband’s advance on Lhasa. The British troops spent a month in Dzong at Gyantse before heading to Lhasa.
The fertile valley of the Nyangchu River is the main tributary of the Brahmaputra river in Tsang, which flows through the county. The valley divides into two different reaches, Upper and lower Nyang. The Upper Nyang is corresponding to the present Gyantse county and the Lower Nyang to Panam county.
The county is at 3950 meters above sea level and has the best barley production area in the Shigatse prefecture, and the county belongs to Shigatse. The city has been developing very fast in the past decades. There are now more than 20,000 people living in this town.
The most famous tourist attractions include the famous battle site Gyantse Dzong, where Tibetans fought the British troops in 1904 and the old Palchoe monastery with its Kumbum Stupa (One-hundred-thousand Buddha) stupa.
By 1440, the construction completed the most impressive architecture of Gyantse, the Kumbum stupa and the Dzong The Palkor Choede Monastery also dates from this period.
Moreover, Gyantse is also famous for the carpet industry. The carpet here has bright colours with complicated patterns and traditional Tibetan diagrams. All the rug here is 100% handmade and sold overseas. Most tourists who travel to Tibet visit the Gyantse carpet factory and buy or order the carpets as souvenirs from Tibet.
