Lhasa Gongkar Airport (Google Map)
Upon arrival at the Lhasa Gongkar airport, our client warmly welcomes by Tibetan local tour guide and the driver with the traditional Tibetan white scarf.
We were driving for about an hour from the airport to Lhasa. If you take the train to Lhasa, It’s just 20 minutes to the hotel. After check-in at the hotel, the guide will brief the tour itineraries for the next few days.
We highly recommend you to rest for acclimatising to the high altitude on the first day of your arrival.
Moreover, there is 50% less oxygen than the sea level in high-altitude places like in Tibet. The higher the altitudes, the less is oxygen in the air. A mild headache, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorder are the usual symptoms of AMS. Take rest!
We will begin our Lhasa cultural tour visit from Jokhang Temple, one of the most sacred temples in Tibet. The temple was built in the 7th century by the 33rd king of Tibet – Songtsen Gampo.
“Jokhang” means the temple of the Buddha. The temple was built to house the statue of Shakyamuni, present to the king from Nepal. After visiting the temple, you can explore the surrounding Barkhor street and spend time walking around the Temple following pilgrims from all over the Tibetan plateau.
In the afternoon, we will visit Sera Monastery, one of three great monasteries of Gelugpa school (Yellow hat school). At 3:00 pm, the debates start in the debating courtyard. To attend the debating session of the monks is the highlight of visiting the Sera monastery.
Today we visit the stunning Potala Palace – the landmark of Lhasa. Potala is the winter palace that was built in the 17th century by the no. 5th Dalai Lama. The visit will show us a fantastic view of the entire rooms, the private quarters of the Dalai Lama, numerous grand state rooms and chapels.
Moreover, in the afternoon, we will visit the Norbu Lingka Palace, the summer palace for the successive Dalai Lamas. The 7th Dalai Lama built the palace in the 18th century.
After breakfast, we drive about an hour to the east of Lhasa city to Drak Yerpa hermitage. The Drak Yerpa Hermitage was once the meditation cave of King Songtsen Gampo, and he built the palace for his Tibetan princess there in the 7th century.
The hermitage is consists of some small chapels and several ancient meditation caves. We were driving back to Lhasa and our free time to explore the old city of Lhasa.
