The Sera Utse day tour in Lhasa is one of the best Lhasa day trips in Tibet. This day tour includes a visit to the Sera Monastery and about a 4hours hike. This short hike is a practice hike for the people who are heading to Mt. Kailash Kora. Therefore, it’s advisable to do this day tour on the third day of your arrival in Tibet and later, which is excellent preparation for acclimatizing the high altitude.

In the morning at 9 o’clock, your guide and driver will pick you up from the hotel and drive to the Sera Monastery. Before reaching the Sera monastery, you will see the Sera Wutse hermitage situated on a high mountain behind the monastery. From here, we will start our Lhasa day trip.

We start our hike along with the pilgrims who are doing Kora around the Sera monastery. The total hike takes about four hours up and down.
The Sera Utse or Choding Hermitage was once the meditation cave of master Tsongkhapa, predates the Sera monastery. One can still visit the cave of the master Tsongkhapa and two small chapels. There are three monks who live and take care for the hermitage at the time of writing. We will have our pack lunch there.
It’s easy to go down but mind your knee. The path was a bit steep and slippery. It takes about one and half hours back to the Sera monastery.
Sera Monastery is one of the three great monasteries of Gelugpa schools in central Tibet. Don’t miss the debate at 3:00 pm, because to attends the debating session of the monks at Sera monastery which is quite popular in Sera.
After the visit, you can rest and had a cup of coffee at Tibet Food King Restaurant, which is just inside the parking lot of Sera Monastery.
