HOW TO PLAN MOUNT KAILASH TOUR?

10th June 2023 By Tennor

How to plan Kailash tour?

For most travellers and pilgrimages people to far west Tibet, their journey aims to make the three-day kora or just the glimpse of the holy Mount Kailash (6,658 metres). The sacred mountain is regarded as the “heart of the world” by Bons, Buddhists, Hindus, and other religious followers. Of all the unique destinations for travellers to visit, Mount Kailash is, without a doubt, the most sacred and holy. Here is the ultimate guide to how to plan a Mount Kailash tour.

When to go to Kailash?

Generally, all the tourists and local pilgrimage people visit Kailash from May to October every year but there are four months in a year that best time at Kailash.

The best time to go to Kailash is from May to June and from September to October. During these four months, there is little rain and snow and the day temperatures are above freezing.

We don’t recommend going to Kailash during the winter period from November to March because of the harsh and cold climate. Moreover, the trek path around Kailash is usually blocked by snow in the winter.

What permits are required for Kailash?

Travelling to Tibet independently is not allowed, but you can travel in a group or private tour organized by a local travel agency in Tibet.

To travel to Tibet, you need a Tibet travel permit, and to visit Kailash, you need an Alien’s travel permit with a border permit and military permit. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to apply for the permits yourself, and you can’t travel to Tibet without a licensed tour guide. Tibet Focus Travel & Tours offers many different Tibet tour packages and all the permits to travel in Tibet.

How to get to Kailash?

Fly, Train or Road to Tibet

To get to Tibet, you can fly from any city in China to Lhasa, which is the easiest way to get into Tibet. Besides domestic flights, there is only one international flight between Lhasa and Kathmandu.

Most Hindu pilgrimage groups from India and abroad prefer to enter and exit Tibet from Kyirong, the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet autonomous region.

To Kailash by road

After you land in Lhasa, we usually recommend two days in Lhasa sightseeing, including the Potala Palace, Jokhang temple and some other significant monasteries in Lhasa. In addition, these two days cultural tours in Lhasa is suitable for acclimatizing to the altitude before heading to Kailash.

The road to Kailash from Lhasa is all paved and a very comfortable drive as compared to before. Though the drive from Lhasa to Kailash is 3-4days, the beauties of landscapes and the breathtaking high passes will give you feelings that you can’t imagine.

To Kailash by flight

You can fly between Lhasa and Ali, but we recommend not flying up to Ali because it is too fast to gain about 2000 metres within a day. The Ali town is the central city in western Tibet, and the airport is about 280km from Darchen – the base camp of Kailash.

There is two flight between Lhasa and Ali per day and the flight time is about 2 hours.

How many days need to Kailash tour?

Plan Mount Kailash tour from China:

Fly or driving from Lhasa to Kailash upon arrival in Tibet is possible, but we didn’t recommend it due to the high risk of High Altitude Sickness. However, the three days of sightseeing in Lhasa and Shigatse helped for acclimatizing to the altitude while exploring the Tibetan culture.

If you drive up to Kailash and back to Lhasa, you need a minimum of 13 days to make the Kailash trip. But if you don’t have enough time, you can fly back to Lhasa.

Plan Mount Kailash tour from Nepal:

The Kyirong border is closer as compared to Lhasa. If you enter Tibet from Nepal through the Kyirong border, it takes a minimum of 9-10 days to make the Kailash trip.

We recommend you stay in Kyirong for two nights. On the second day upon your arrival in Tibet, your guide will take you for half a day hike around the town, which is well-ready for your Kailash trek and acclimatization.

If you enter Tibet from Nepal, you need a China Group Visa from the Chinese embassy in Nepal. To obtain the group Visa, you must need at least three working days in Kathmandu with your original Passport.
