Usually, an elevation of more than 3000 meters (8000ft) may let you suffer from AMS. Tibet’s average elevation is about 4000 meters. So what is altitude sickness? Altitude sickness is a tough challenge you have to conquer during your trip to Tibet Then how to define the “high altitude”? Actually, the definitions vary.
Following is a widely-agreed definition of “high altitude” when it is related to High Altitude Sickness:
If not being treated well, mild sickness may cause severe sickness, even threaten your life. So you have to be well prepared for your Tibet trip.
It is recommended that when you first travel to Tibet, you can’t walk fast, you can’t run, you can’t do physical labour, you can’t get overeating, and not increase the burden of digestive organs.
Don’t drink alcohol and smoke, eat more vitamin-rich foods such as vegetables and fruits. Drink plenty of water.
Keep warm and not taking a bath to avoid catching a cold and consuming physical strength. Don’t take oxygen at the beginning; try to adapt to it yourself. Otherwise, you may never be able to get oxygen in the plateau.
It is quite common that most people will suffer from acute mountain sickness at different levels while you travel to Tibet. Please also note that the sickness usually can heal itself by eventually acclimatizing your body to the altitude, air pressure, and temperatures.
